Hey lovebugs!
How was your Valentine’s Day? Whether yesterday made you star-eyed mushy gushy over a guy, or reaffirmed your belief that no man will ever beat the sensual satisfaction promised by a box of Lindt peanut butter chocolate truffles (which by the way, I’ve decided might be better than Reese’s…might)…
we can all unite under the same banner of joy because…today is FRIDAY!
Since a body-sized Valentine’s Day card didn’t arrive at my door yesterday (Prince Charming, if you’re reading this, take note: all I’ve ever wanted on February 14th is one of these), I decided to celebrate the day of LOVE with something I love.
You won’t believe this, but frozen yogurt has been absent from my life since December, which I’m pretty sure is an all-time record. Have I told you that I used to eat frozen yogurt every day in college? It’s true. Every. Single. Day. Try coupling that with a twice-a-day Starbucks addiction, and you have a pretty good idea of what happened to my checking account during those years. Oy.
Anyway! I was excited when my friend Liz asked if I wanted to meet at Pinkberry yesterday afternoon, so I arrived extra early just so that I could sample all of the flavors. I ended up settling on a bowl of chocolate hazelnut topped with chocolate crispies, walnuts and strawberries, which was much better than the picture looks (darn fuzzy iPhone shots!).
Food Quirks
Did you notice how each of my toppings was applied separately, rather than on top of one another? Even though this is how Pinkberry swirlers usually top frozen yogurt bowls, I always make a special request, just to be sure. One of my food quirks is that I never ever eat more than one topping at a time. In other words, yesterday I took a bite of walnuts, then a bite of straberries, then a bite of chocolate crispies, and then repeated that process until I was finished. Silly? Yes! Necessary? Most definitely.
My specific frozen yogurt preferences reminded me of an NPR segment I heard last week about peoples’ food habits. The hosts asked listeners to call in and share their unique food or eating quirks, and there were some pretty strange ones! I thought I’d share some of them (as well as my friends’ and my own!) with you; you’re bound to be left laughing…or maybe just scratching your head.
So, without further ado…
One caller on the radio show shared that she can only eat a waffle after maple syrup has been drizzled carefully into each individual square.
In other words, she wouldn’t touch this one! (But doesn’t it look delicious!?)
Another man confessed that the way he eats Doritos is a bit out of the ordinary…because he doesn’t really eat them. He just licks off all of the cheesy coating, then tosses the naked chip in the trash. Bizarre, no?
Yet another woman shared that she dislikes all forms of cooked fruit. Life without warm apple crumble? I can’t imagine such a thing!
A former roommate of mine had a thing about Fruit Loops; she’d pour herself a bowl every morning, and only eat them one color at a time, in rainbow color order.
One of the exchange students my family hosted while I was in high school slathered mayonnaise on his pizza, claiming that it was the only way to eat it. He was from Paraguay, but apparently mayonnaise-topped pizzas are a common thing in Japan, too!
Mayo Jaga Pizza (available at Japanese Domino’s)
A childhood friend of mine won’t go near the “tough” ends of French fries, preferring to eat only the soft middle.
And finally, around Easter time, one of my best friends always buys a pack of yellow Marshmallow Peeps. After which she immediately punctures a hole in the package and tucks them away in a cabinet. Because, of course, the only way to enjoy a Marshmallow Peep is when it’s stale.
Although who am I to judge? Wait until you hear a few of my own quirks:
- When I eat a peanut butter cup, I bite it down the center, peel away the chocolate and eat it, then enjoy the best part (the peanut butter, of course!) last.
- I won’t eat any artificially blue food. Blueberries? No problem. Blue peanut M&Ms? Not going near one. Blue cotton candy? Nope, not touching it!
- Sandwiches? I’m a tearer. I rarely take a bite into my sandwich, instead preferring to tear each piece off separately. The same goes for pizza and quesadillas.
- When I eat chips and guacamole alone, I always lick the guacamole off first, and then finish the chip. I try hard to resist the urge to do this in public, especially when I’m eating with people I barely know, but it’s hard!
- Bananas have to be sliced. Unless that is, they’re being baked into breakfast; then they’re mashed. Oh, and I eat at least one banana every day. Always.
*******
Okay, now it’s YOUR TURN!
What are your personal food quirks? Do any of these sound familiar? Or totally freak you out?
and…
What’s the best thing you ate on Valentine’s Day?
Have a wonderful weekend, dear friends!!
xoxo
